Michael Thonet's life's work impressively reflects the transition from craftsmanship to industrial mass production in the 19th century. But the success of Thonet's manufacturing was not based solely on the perfection of solid wood bending. It was the entrepreneurial vision of master carpenter Michael Thonet that guaranteed the permanent development of products and production techniques. The best proof of his extraordinary skills is the bentwood furniture that is still produced in Frankenberg today, based on Michael Thonet's originals. The Thonet Museum grew from very small beginnings. Many pieces could be purchased or traded in locally, as the factory had been producing in Frankenberg since 1889.

Georg Thonet, a great-grandson of the founder Michael Thonet, gave the collection a decisive boost through his passion for finding and purchasing Thonet furniture even in the remotest corners of the earth. The reopening of the Thonet Museum in 1989 took place exactly one hundred years after the founding of the Thonet factory in Frankenberg.
